There's so much more to tell you about this area. But to give you an in depth look and to save time, here's a set of links to a few of the many possible plein air painting, photography and tour destinations:
- Revisit the Hudson River School, Frederick Church's home, Olana
- And the Thomas Cole home, Cedar
Grove; And while you are on the thomascole website, make sure you
follow the Hudson
River Art Trail, because we'll be following that trail's stops 3-7.
- Discover the campus and
all it offers
- And of course the
town
- But there's all of Ulster County waiting for you
- You are just 8 miles from one of the most popular hiking and photography
areas in all of NY, Minnewaska
State Park (Learn a new name, 'The Gunks')
- And people will tell you, you have to see Mohonk Mountain House
- Just beyond the Mohonk Preserve, High Falls on the old Delaware and Hudson Canal
- Across the river or down the Interstate or both: Roosevelt home and library
- Vanderbilt Mansion
- And just south of the homes, the Culinary Institute of America and superb dining. Reservations required well in advance

What do artists take with them when they travel?
This link takes you to the website of Canadian artist Robert Genn who
writes a bi-weekly letter to artists around the world. His "Painters
Keys" community responded to the Travel Tips letter with a
variety of creative and informative suggestions. You can read the original
letter then scroll down the response column. If you wish to join the
discussions, there is no charge to receive Robert's letter. www.painterskeys.com
Easel? Pochade Box? Journal? Some artists travel with a lot, some with very little.
If you plan to transport a Julian style easel, The Container Store has a terrific new "Shopping Cart". The easel is light, good-looking and easy to pull. On their website, you can even read comments from people who've purchased it. www.containerstore.com
For journals and sketchbooks, I like Cheap Joes American Journey series. In fact I really like Cheap Joes in general. Cruise the site. Their small artist's boxes (type in 'pochade box' and look at the Guerilla Painter's Kit) are light and compact. www.cheapjoes.com
And if you can't find what you want at Joe's, Dick Blick has an extensive inventory and an entire department devoted to working on site. www.dickblick.com
And, happily, there's a fine new art store in New Paltz. For instance, Manny's is well stocked and open Monday thru Saturday. www.mannysart.com
Who knows when illness may strike or if other events will intrude on your travel plans? Most tours are nonrefundable after a certain date, so whether you travel with us or others, travel insurance is your protection. It is affordable and highly recommended. Do a Google search for travel insurance and see the options and choices available, and then purchase what's best for you. Often it can be arranged easily on-line. You can compare travel policies quickly at www.insuremytrip.com
Temperatures are generally moderate in New York in late June, with cool evenings, but consult local weather predictions before packing. (a light slicker never hurts) Otherwise dress for comfort and if you plan on hiking with us, be sure to bring appropriate shoes. www.forcast.weather.gov (New Paltz, New York 12561)
There are many travel guides for the Hudson valley available on-line. Chose one that best suits your interests. Art, History, Dining, Hiking and so on. www.barnesandnoble.com or www.amazon.com
You'll want a good pair of binoculars so you can see forever
and beyond from the many peaks in the Catskills and the Shawangunks.
Or perhaps catch a glimpse of soaring bald eagles or nesting American
bluebirds.
